UK Skip Sizes

In the UK, skip sizes are hired based on their internal volume. The internal size of a skip is in cubic yards, which you will usually see referred to as just ‘yards’.

 

How Do I Choose A Skip Size?

Before you book your skip hire, you need to choose what size skip you need! Choosing the right size skip can be tricky as it can be hard to visualise the amount of waste you have and whether it will fit inside a skip!

One of the easiest ways to imagine what you can fit inside a skip is to think of bin bags! All of our skips state the average amount of black bin bags they will hold to make it easy for you when booking.

 

What Is The Most Popular Skip Size?

The most popular and commonly booked skip size in the UK is the 8 yard skip.  Accommodating about 60 bin bags worth of waste. An 8 yard skip will meet all domestic needs from clear outs to renovations.

 

What Size Skip Do I Need For Renovations?

The most common size skip for kitchen or bathroom renovations would be a 6 or 8 yard skip. An average-sized kitchen will comfortably fit in a 8 yard skip.

Of course, if you know your kitchen or bathroom is bigger than the average, you may want to size up a little bit. We haven’t come across many kitchens that won’t fit in a 8 yard skip though.

 

What Size Skip Do I Need For Garden Work?

For most average garden renovations a 6 yard skip should be just fine, including those where you want to get rid of a patio or large amounts of turf.

 

What Size Skip Do I Need For Furniture?

A 6 yard skip will fit a good amount of household furniture, including the average-sized sofa or dining table.

If you’re doing a full house clearance, you may want to look at larger skips.

 

Bigger Skip Sizes And What They’re Used For

Most domestic skip hire is 6 or 8 yard. We do have skips for bigger projects or clearances though. An 8 yard skip will hold about 80 bags of waste. Bigger skips can be used for large home renovation projects such as tearing down large garages, or a conservatory. Clean hardcore can be added to 8 yard skips too.

If you’re going bigger than 8 yards, you’re usually hiring for commercial purposes. 12 and 16 yard skips are ideal for large amounts of bulky packaging, construction waste or large amounts of furniture.

 

Container Skips

The biggest of all skips is our 20 or 40 yard containers. 20 yard containers have quite low sides so aren’t ideal for bulky items but are ideal for hardcore and general waste. The higher sided 40 yard container is better if you have a lot of bulky items to dispose of. Due to their extremely large size, these roll on roll off container skips are often used for waste management on commercial and industrial sites.

 

How Much Is Too Much In A Skip?

Skips shouldn’t be filled so that waste is higher than the skip walls. To help you know when your skip is full, all of our skips have a fill line on them. Don’t exceed this!

Yes, you do commonly see skips piled with rubbish at the side of the road but that’s wrong and will cause issues when your skip is collected. Stick to the fill line!

Don’t fill a skip entirely with heavy items either – we expect some waste to be heavy but if you have a lot of really dense heavy waste, book a bigger skip.
